Minister

Nicolás Eyzaguirre Guzmán

Nicolás Eyzaguirre has a Commercial Engineering Degree and a Major in Economics with specialty in Economic Development from Universidad de Chile. He has Ph.D. studies in Economics with specialty in Macroeconomics and Foreign Trade from Harvard University.

In the public sphere, he served as Minister Secretary General of the Presidency between June 2015 and August 2017, and Minister of Education between March 2014 and June 2015. From 2000 to 2006, he headed the Ministry of Finance under the administration of President Ricardo Lagos. In 2006, was appointed President of the National Council of Innovation for Competitiveness. Until 1997, he was Director of Studies of the Chilean Central Bank. Until 1992, he was also Manager of Studies of the same institution.

In the private sector, he served until September 2013 as Chairman of the Directive Board of Canal 13, and Director of BancoEstado (2006-2007). He has a long career in the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He was Executive Director of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay (1997-2000) and Director of the Western Hemisphere Department (2008-2012).

In the academic area, he has taught Introduction to Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Monetary Policy, Financial Policy and Development at Universidad de Chile, Universidad de Santiago, Universidad Diego Portales, Universidad Central, Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano and Harvard University. He also lectured at the Institute for Latin American Cooperation (ICI), the Latin American Institute for Economic and Social Planning (ILPES), the Economic Commission for Latin America (CEPAL), the Uruguayan Office of Planning and Budget (OPP) and the Technical Secretariat of Planning of the Presidency of the Republic of Paraguay (STP).
